Chihuahua Origins

The Chihuahua breed are one of the oldest breeds of dog in the world, having originated in Mexico over 3,000 years ago, with a lineage dating back to the ancient kingdoms of pre-Columbian times.

It is the national dog of Mexico, known as the Chihuahueño in Spanish, getting its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. They are among the oldest breeds in the Americas.

The modern-day shorthaired Chihuahua was found in the 1850s when American travelers to Mexico brought the small dogs back with them. In 1890, a Chihuahua named Midget became the first of his breed to be registered with the American Kennel Club.

The breed’s popularity surged in the 1930s and 1940s and from the 1960s onward, the Chihuahua has been one of the most popular breeds registered by the American Kennel Club.

Chihuahua Breed Characteristics

Chihuahua Breed

Chihuahua Appearance

The Chihuahua is a small dog weighing no more than 6 pounds with a terrier-like demeanor and a sassy, outsize personality.

Its rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The Chihuahuas have very expressive, full, luminous round eyes, and large, erect ears, set in a high, dramatically rounded skull.

Chihuahuas occur in nearly every color combination, from solid to marked or splashed.

There are two types of coats for Chihuahuas: long and smooth.

The smooth-coated Chihuahua has a shiny, smooth coat that fits close to the body with a ruff of thick, longer hair on the neck, thinner hair on the head and ears, and a furry tail.

The long-coated Chihuahua has a soft coat that is flat or slightly curly.

Chihuahua Temperament

Chihuahuas are charming and loyal companions. These little dogs are known for their strong attachment to their owners and can be very affectionate.

Despite their size, Chihuahuas often have large personalities, marked by confidence and boldness. Add to these attributes their intelligence, playfulness, and affectionate nature.

Even though Chihuahuas are bold and self-assured dogs, they are sensitive and thrive on affection and companionship. Chihuahuas tend to bond with a single person, though they are usually willing to make friends with new people if introduced properly.

Chihuahuas are energetic and love to play, so they are good for active people or families. On the other hand, they could happily spend hours on your lap or snuggle under the blankets, where it is warm and cozy.

Training Your Chihuahua

Even tiny dogs need training, and if you don’t, this cunning scamp will rule your home. They still require training, just like other dogs.

Chihuahuas are primarily indoor dogs, well-suited to small living spaces. Therefore training is imperative.

There is an alert intelligence behind those shining eyes, and your Chihuahua is a quick and enthusiastic learner.

Chihuahuas are easy to train with positive reinforcement methods. Your Chihuahua will quickly pick up all you can teach him if you teach him through positive reinforcement methods like play, praise, and food rewards.

Chihuahuas will get along well with your other family pets, like cats, if introduced at a young age.

Chihuahua Needs

Grooming

Chihuahuas have low grooming needs. Because of their short coats, Chihuahuas require minimal grooming, and they require little upkeep.

The Chihuahua is a wash-and-go dog. Grooming takes only a few minutes each week.

To remove loose or dead hair, use a fine-toothed flea comb. Chihuahuas shed small amounts year-round and may shed somewhat more in the spring and fall.

The long-haired variety will require a little more upkeep. The long-haired Chihuahua most likely resulted from crosses with longer-haired dogs like Papillons or Pomeranians.

The long-haired Chihuahua’s undercoat may come out in little clumps, however, regular brushing will help keep shedding under control.

Socialising

Chihuahuas are alert and funny “purse dogs”. If they are not properly socialized as puppies, however, they may be timid.

As with all dogs, Chihuahuas require early socialisation. This includes exposure to a wide range of people, sights, sounds, and experiences – in order to grow into well-rounded canines.

Because of their small size, they are easy to transport and make great travel companions. If they are socialised, you will be able to take them almost anywhere.

Although they are too little to play rough with children and require extra care in the winter, Chihuahuas make great city pets as long as they have plenty of quality time on their favorite lap.

Activities

Even though Chihuahuas are small dogs, they still require exercise like other dogs.

An adult Chihuahua can have a surprising amount of energy; he will play for as long as you do and chase squirrels in the backyard incessantly.

Chihuahuas enjoy going for walks, play time around the yard, and retrieving their toys. Although they enjoy playing outside, especially on hot days, they should never live outside.

Chihuahuas often live relatively long lives, often reaching 15 years or more with proper care and the required exercise.
