Pomeranian Origins

The Pomeranian hails from a landmass bordering Poland, Germany, and the Baltic Sea, which is now known as the Pomeranian regions of Poland and Northern Germany.

The Pomeranian breed is descended from an extraordinarily long line of Arctic work dogs. These were large sled dogs closely related to breeds like the American Eskimo Dog, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Norwegian Elkhound, and Samoyed.

These dogs were often kept as pets and companions, and people have relied greatly on them for a variety of tasks, including safeguarding livestock, sled hauling, house guarding, and herding.

The goal of Pomeranian dog breeders breeding different types of Spitz dogs found in Iceland, Lapland, and other Nordic countries was to create a smaller dog that could be kept indoors, which became known as Pomeranians.

Pomeranian Appearance

The Pomeranian is a small dog breed that typically stands 20 to 36 cm tall at the shoulder when fully grown, weighing in at between 1.36 and 3.17 kilograms.

Despite their compact size, Pomeranians are sturdy, with a solid body, a short neck, and neat, compact feet that resemble cats. They are dainty dogs and walk with grace and elegance.

With an abundant textured coat, one of their most distinguishing features is the luxurious puff of fur that surrounds their chest and neck, which Poms are well known for. They also have a fringe of feathery hair on the hindquarters. Their distinctive tail is covered in long, straight hair and is carried high and flat over their back.

One of their most distinguishing features is the luxurious puff of fur that surrounds their chest and neck.

Pomeranians are described as having a fox-like expression with almond-shaped, bright, and expressive eyes that are complemented by small, pointy ears.

The Pomeranian comes in the widest range of colours of any dog breed, with the most common being orange, black, or cream/white.

The female Pomeranian dog is slightly larger than the male.

Pomeranian Temperament

Pomeranians are extroverted, love being the center of attention, and are loving companion dogs with a charming personality.

Alert, intelligent, and confident, with the bravery and endurance of much larger dogs, this little, affectionate breed is noted for being bright and feisty. They enjoy learning new tasks and bring much joy to their owners.

The Pomeranian

Pomeranians are generally friendly, lively, and playful. They are alert, taking note of any changes in their space, and will bark at new stimuli.

Pomeranians are good playmates for kids because of their small size. Bear in mind, though, that kids should be taught how to play with and interact with their dog, as Pomeranians may respond adversely and suddenly to being handled a little roughly.

Training Your Pomeranian

Every Pomeranian is trainable through consistent practice, socialisation, lots of love, and plenty of treats.

Like any dog, Pomeranians need proper training to become well-mannered pups. They are highly intelligent and eager to please their owner, so a training session should be fruitful.

Pomeranians usually approach tasks like learning new tricks with enthusiasm.

A tip for Pomeranian dog training; it is best done in short sessions with lots of encouragement and rewards.

Pomeranian Needs

Grooming

This popular breed has a thick, beautiful coat, but they are surprisingly easy to groom.

Pomeranians have a thick double coat, a straight and puffy outercoat, held off their body by the dense, soft, fluffy undercoat.

Pomeranian breeders say hygienic grooming is recommended every two months with trimming claws every month and full coat is every 4-6 months. Brush daily.

Their coat can get quite knotty and tangled, particularly when the undercoat is being shed, which occurs twice yearly.

Socialising

Like other dogs, Pomeranians benefit from early socialisation; however, because of their small stature, make sure they are associating with other little dogs.

Activities

In general, Pomeranians make great lap dogs, but they also require lots of opportunity to run around and play.

Weak Joints

If your dog is allowed on the couch or bed, you should think about getting dog stairs, as jumping can strain their joints.
